ROOTED Week 3

WEEK 3

John 4:1-42

Leader:  Have students have their notebook and write down the section reference.

Tell them to write down any references that stand out to them, either confusing, inspiring, meaningful, etc.  Have them end with an application.

Background:

  • Theme: Jesus is the promised Messiah of the OT.  He is the Son of God

  • Author: The disciple John.

  • Why: So people will repent and believe and be transformed.

  • Samaritans: racially mixed group.  Partly Jewish and from other nations.  Mixed religious practices.

  • Jews considered Samaritans as “lesser” and looked down on them.

  • Samaritans had their own version of Torah (first five books of the Bible), a different temple, and a different record of history. Jewish people saw it as defacing the truth and disobeying God’s standards.

  • People went to a well to get water. People would go in the morning because it would be less hot. But this woman goes in the middle of the day to avoid others.

  • Sixth hour = noon

Read the whole passage aloud. (streetlights)

  • Highlight/underline any verses that stand out to you or that are confusing.

  • What themes do you see? (Want kids to grow in identifying what a whole passage is about)

Read Verses 1-6

  • What is the setting?

Read Verses 7-15

  • What do you notice about how Jesus treats this woman?

  • From what you know about Jews and Samaritans, why is this important?

  • How does the woman treat Jesus?

  • What does it mean that Jesus is living water?

Read Verses 16-26

  • What does this paragraph tell us about the woman?

  • Why is the woman surprised by what Jesus is promising based on their differences?

Read Verses 27-38

  • How do the disciples respond?

  • How does Jesus correct them?

  • What does Jesus really mean when he is talking about food and the harvest?

Read Verses 39-42
