ROOTED Week 2 Fall 2025

1. Icebreaker Idea (1-2 minutes)

  • Quick Poll: “If you had the power to instantly heal one thing in the world, what would it be?”

    • Have the students take a minute to talk to their mentor or parent about it

2. Scripture Reading

-The book of Mark provides us with an overview of a side of Jesus that is important for us to realize and remember, his willingness to serve others. Through Jesus’ servanthood to others, we are able to read about the power and authority he possessed which gave him the ability and right to affect the lives of people he encountered throughout his life. This brings us to an important point that I would like you all to remember tonight:

  • Point #1: The power that Jesus possessed changed the lives of many people.

    • Ask the students what they think it means to be powerful.

      • Definition: having control and influence over people and events

  • Relevant Scripture: Mark 10:45 - For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.

- Jesus heals a man with an unclean spirit (v. 21-28)

  • As Jesus is walking through town with his companions and teaching others, he encounters a man who is being tormented by an evil spirit. The man, under the influence of this spirit, begins to shout at Jesus out of fear.

    • Why do you think this man, or the evil spirit was afraid? (question to ask students)

      • One of the reasons that the evil spirits may have been afraid was because they were affecting the people God created in a way that they were not supposed to (not being used the way God intended).

      • Analogy: Ask the students who have siblings if they have ever been playing with a toy or game that they knew their sibling didn’t want them playing with and then got caught. How did they feel when they were caught?

  • Point #2: The authority that Jesus has brings freedom instead of fear.

-Jesus heals and teaches many people (v. 29-39)

  • Through this section of the chapter we read about how Jesus continues to help the people that he met while traveling. Again, I want to point out that Jesus was not walking around to just tell people that he was an important person with a lot of power. He was demonstrating his compassion to people and showing that the power he possessed had the ability to affect the everyday lives of people. That is our third point for tonight:

    • Point #3: Jesus is compassionate and has the power to affect our lives everyday.

  • Just to recap quickly before we wrap up the teaching, how did Jesus affect the lives of people in this passage?

    • Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law, showing He cares about families.

    • Crowds came because people were hurting and Jesus responded with love

    • Jesus decides to travel to other regions in order to help people in various communities

-As we end our teaching tonight and break up into our discussion groups, I want to leave you with this last point:

  • Point #4: The actions and words of Jesus show us God’s heart toward us.

    • Jesus still brings healing today. Sometimes healing is physical, but sometimes it’s peace, comfort, or strength in the midst of difficult situations. What I hope that you know or will be reminded of is that we can bring our needs, and the needs of others, to God in prayer and that He hears and cares.

Discussion Questions

  1. Read through the rest of Mark chapter 1 (verses 40-45) and Mark 2:1-12 together. Which of the healings in Mark 1 and 2 that you read tonight stood out most to you? Why?

2.What do these healings show us about who Jesus is?

3.How do you think people felt when Jesus healed them or their family members?

4.What’s the difference between healing and just feeling better for a little while?

5.If Jesus walked into our school today, who do you think He would stop to help first?
